Starting from the reality created by the integration of the Romanian Academy of Sciences in the Academy of the Romanian People’s Republic and taking into account that in scientifically and industrially developed countries it is considered natural and normal for several academies or societies to exist in a state. scientific knowledge of scientists, The president of the Romanian Academy at that time, academician Traian Săvulescu, organized on March 23, 1956 the founding meeting of the Association of Romanian Scientists (AOS), as a reparative gesture towards the abolition of ASR in 1948 .
The Romanian Association of Scientists was established, as a legal entity, by HCM no. 1012/30 May 1956 in order to support the coordination of scientific work at the national level and the representation of this research at the international level. The AOS consisted of collective members – scientific organizations – and individual members, prestigious scientists, who adhered to the statute of the association.
AOS management
The supreme governing body of the AOS was the general meeting of voting delegates, and the governing body in the interval between general meetings was a steering committee. Following the constituent meeting, the AOS steering committee was elected, consisting of the President of the Romanian Academy, academician Traian Săvulescu, President, academics Ştefan Bălan and Mihail Ralea, Vice Presidents, and academics Gheorghe Macovei, Grigore Moisil, Gheorghe Murgeanu and Constantin Budeanu, members .
In 1968, Academician Athanasie Joja (1968-1973) was elected President, and from 1973 to December 1994, AOS President was Academician Nicolaie Teodorescu.
At the general assembly of December 9, 1994, academician Nicolae Teodorescu became Honorary President, and AOS President was elected Grl. Prof. Univ. Dr. Vasile Cândea, full member of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Furthermore, AOS ‘s own activity has seen new values along the lines of 1989.
AOS activity
The first objective of the activity of the Romanian Scientists Association (since 1956) was to represent scientists, all Romanian scientific researchers in international non-governmental organizations (UNESCO, Pugwash Movement, World Federation of Scientists, etc.).
The Romanian Association of Scientists has organized conferences, debates, exhibitions, documentary visits in the country and abroad and has participated through its collective or individual members in domestic and international scientific events. Through the way in which AOS fulfilled this objective (participation in the actions regarding the scientific life and the relations of science with the contemporary society carried out by these international organizations), Romania was appreciated for the value of the delegations and their contributions.
After 1989, the Romanian Association of Scientists deeply reorganized its activity, and after the general assembly in October 1990, the AOS leadership began a meticulous and constant work of reconstitution, of re-establishing on its own tracks the scientific objectives of general interest that stood. in front of.
